Frequently Asked Questions

What do the dogs do all day?

Your dog and up to 4 others will adhere to a flexible schedule that includes socialization, play, individual and group training, and enrichment activities. The schedule is flexible to keep from creating unnecessary anxiety in your pets. Read more about schedule anxiety HERE. Below is a sample schedule and you can watch our live feed HERE and see what we teach HERE.

8-8:30 drop off

8-9 low structured play

9-9:30 group activity (fetch, sniffing, tug, music, light stimulus, etc)

9:30-11:30 one-on-one training (20 minutes for each dog in basic obedience, leash skills, tricks, basic manners, etc)

11:30-12 low structure play

12-12:15 lunch for any dogs that need it

12:15-1:15 nap time (in individual crates while I take a lunch break)

1:15-1:45 low structure play

1:45-2:15 enrichment (new toys, healthy snack, desensitization of a novel stimulus, etc)

2:15-4:15 one-on-one training

4:15-4:45 low structure play and pick-up

Why do the dogs get naps? I want my dog tired!

Being over-tired can be detrimental to behavior. If your dog continues to train and play even after exhausting all of their energy, they may begin to exhibit inappropriate behaviors. We all need breaks throughout the day – even our pets! Containment is also a crucial part of training. All dogs need to learn to be calm and quiet when they do not get to be with a group. As much as we would love it, our dogs cannot always be with us. If we don't teach them how to be calm on their own, it can cause destructive behaviors and separation anxiety down the line. Read more about crate training HERE and separation anxiety HERE.

Can I send my dog to Notre Dog Academy instead of training them myself?

No. Well, of course you can, but don't expect them to be trained. This is why board and train facilities are few and far between – dogs do not generalize easily! If we train your dog, they will listen to us, but not you. In my experience working with service dogs, it was crucial that the dog work with as many people in as many places as possible so that they could learn that each behavior is the same no matter where they are or who is asking. You have to put in the work, but having consistency at the academy will help your dog to generalize the training and learn it more quickly. They also won't be able to practice the behaviors that you don't like (such as barking and jumping up) and will learn faster that those things are never ok. Learn more about generalization HERE.

What if I can’t get there during drop-off and pick-up time?

On a case-by-case basis we may be able to accommodate early drop-off or late pick-up. There will be an extra fee and you should expect your dog to be kenneled during the time they are at the facility outside business hours.

What is your cancellation policy?

Due to our very limited availability, cancellations must be made 3 business days in advance (Monday through Friday) to guarantee no loss of paid credits.
This information is also in our Policy and Waiver agreement.

Can I hire you for private lessons or group training?

Yes! View all of our services and pricing HERE

What if I can’t bring my dog to Notre Dog Academy on our scheduled day?

There are no refunds if you are unable to make your scheduled day. If you would like to change a scheduled day, you must do so at least two business days in advance or you will forfeit your purchase. Availability to your desired day is not guaranteed. With such a limited capacity of only 5 dogs per day, we need to know who is coming and when so that we can have a full schedule every day.

Where do the dogs go to the bathroom?

We offer potty breaks for each dog multiple times per day. Each training session includes practicing going into and out of the facility properly and they are given a chance to potty while outside working. Unfortunately, like any other facility that allows dogs, your dogs may occasionally relieve themselves indoors. But don't fret! Because dogs don't generalize well, they do not associate the Academy as the same as your home.

What if my dog needs lunch or medications during the day?

We are happy to serve your dog lunch as long as you provide the individual portion at drop off. If your dog needs any medications administered while at the Academy, there will be an extra fee assessed depending on the delivery method of the medication.
